About the role
Ocean to Earth Recruitment is working with an established and growing ecological consultancy to appoint a Senior Ecologist to its experienced terrestrial ecology team.
This is a varied role for an ecologist who wants to combine fieldwork and technical ecology with project management, client contact and mentoring. You will work across projects throughout the UK, including housing, renewable energy, commercial, retail and other development sectors.
The role
You will manage your own ecology projects while continuing to develop your technical expertise across habitats and protected species.
Your work will include:
Designing and leading Phase 1 / UKHab surveys
Undertaking protected species surveys including bats, badgers, dormice, GCN, reptiles, otters, water voles and nesting birds
Delivering ECoW work
Preparing PEARs, EcIAs, Environmental Statement chapters and BNG assessments
Managing small, medium and larger ecology projects
Liaising directly with clients and project stakeholders
Preparing tenders for new ecology projects
Reviewing the work of junior ecologists and providing mentoring and technical guidance
What we’re looking for
You will ideally have at least three years' relevant professional experience within ecological consultancy or a closely related environment, together with a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification.
You should have good knowledge of UKHab or Phase 1 habitat surveys, protected species surveys, mitigation and UK wildlife legislation, alongside the ability to produce high-quality ecological reports.
Full or Associate membership of CIEEM, or eligibility to obtain this, is required, together with a full UK driving licence.
Experience with NVC, MoRPh, QGIS, protected species licensing or development licence applications would be particularly useful, although these are desirable rather than essential.
Why consider this opportunity?
This is a role where you can remain actively involved in terrestrial ecology while gradually taking on more responsibility for projects, clients and colleagues.
There is a clear opportunity to continue developing towards Principal Ecologist, alongside exposure to larger and more complex ecological projects as your experience develops.
The consultancy also places a strong emphasis on flexibility, work-life balance, professional development and creating an inclusive working environment.
If you are an experienced ecologist looking for a varied Senior role with strong technical work and genuine progression, please apply through Environment.jobs or contact Vicky Kenrick at Ocean to Earth Recruitment for a confidential conversation.
