Ecology jobs in the UK

Ecology is a practical, field-based discipline. Most UK ecologists spend part of the year outdoors surveying species and habitats, and the rest of it writing reports, analysing survey data and supporting planning applications. It's one of the few environmental careers where a degree in ecology, zoology or environmental science is genuinely a standard requirement.

The workload is strongly seasonal. Bat, great crested newt, breeding bird, reptile and dormouse surveys concentrate in the April–September window, and consultancies hire assistant and seasonal ecologists to cover it. Winter is when reports get written, tenders get won, and Biodiversity Net Gain calculations get finalised.

The 2024 mandatory BNG regime in England has expanded demand across the sector. Employers include large multidisciplinary consultancies (RSK, WSP, Arup, Stantec, Wood), specialist ecology firms, wildlife trusts, the RSPB and local authorities. Chartered status through CIEEM and protected species licences (bats, GCN, badgers) are the strongest predictors of promotion.
