Graduate environmental jobs in the UK

Graduate environmental jobs cover both structured graduate schemes at large consultancies and standalone junior positions at smaller firms, wildlife trusts and public bodies. Structured schemes typically run for 18–24 months, rotate you across teams, and include chartership support (CEnv, CSci, CEng). Standalone junior roles offer faster ownership of client work and — in some cases — more variety.

Most large graduate schemes open applications between September and December for the following autumn intake, though smaller firms hire year-round. Common disciplines include environmental consultancy, ecology, sustainability, ESG, planning, air quality, contaminated land, water resources and carbon management.

Employers usually look for a relevant degree at 2:1 or above (environmental science, geography, ecology, geology, planning, engineering, chemistry or sustainability), evidence of interest in the sector (student membership of IEMA, CIWEM or CIEEM helps), and softer skills — report writing, teamwork, willingness to travel to site.
