Sustainability jobs in the UK

Sustainability is one of the fastest-growing professional job categories in the UK. Employers now expect sustainability teams to combine strategic thinking with hard data — measuring emissions, running climate risk assessments, engaging suppliers, briefing boards and steering investment decisions. If you enjoy translating environmental issues into business decisions, this is where most of the hiring is happening.

The category covers a wide spread of day-to-day work. Analysts spend their time building carbon inventories, running CDP and GRI disclosures, and modelling reduction pathways. Managers own reporting cycles, science-based target submissions and stakeholder engagement. Heads of sustainability sit closer to the executive team, working on strategy, capital allocation and transition planning across the whole organisation.

Common entry routes include graduate schemes at consultancies (RSK, Anthesis, WSP, Ramboll, Arup, ERM), moving across from finance, operations or supply-chain roles, or completing an IEMA qualification alongside relevant work experience. A first degree helps but is rarely mandatory for analyst-level positions if you can demonstrate the numeracy and communication skills the role needs.
