About the role

Help Deliver Environmentally Responsible Development Across Scotland

Are you passionate about protecting the environment and ensuring construction projects are delivered responsibly?

Ocean to Earth Recruitment is supporting an established environmental consultancy in its search for an Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) to join its growing team in Inverness.

This opportunity offers a rewarding mix of environmental monitoring, site inspections, technical reporting and practical environmental advice across renewable energy, infrastructure and residential development projects.

Whether you're already working as an Environmental Clerk of Works or have a background in ecology, environmental consultancy or environmental management and are looking to broaden your experience, we'd be pleased to hear from you.

What Will You Be Doing?

As an Environmental Clerk of Works, you'll help ensure construction and development activities meet environmental legislation, planning conditions and agreed environmental standards.

Working closely with contractors, project managers and environmental specialists, your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out environmental inspections, site monitoring and compliance audits.

  • Advising construction teams on environmental protection, pollution prevention and best practice.

  • Identifying potential environmental risks and recommending practical mitigation measures.

  • Monitoring compliance with planning conditions, environmental permits and relevant legislation.

  • Preparing environmental reports, Surface Water Management Plans (SWMPs) and Pollution Prevention Plans (PPPs).

  • Supporting environmental management throughout the construction phase of projects.

  • Liaising with clients, contractors and regulatory bodies.

  • Maintaining accurate environmental records and technical documentation.

You'll have the opportunity to work across a variety of project environments, gaining valuable experience while helping to minimise environmental impacts.

What Experience Are We Looking For?

We're interested in hearing from environmental professionals who combine sound technical knowledge with a practical approach to problem-solving.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • A degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Management or a related subject.

  • Strong communication and report-writing skills.

  • Good organisational skills and the confidence to work independently.

  • An understanding of environmental protection and compliance.

  • A full UK driving licence.

  • An interest in working on construction and development sites.

Additional experience that would be particularly valuable includes:

  • Previous Environmental Clerk of Works or environmental compliance experience.

  • Construction site inspections, monitoring or environmental auditing.

  • Knowledge of Scottish environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.

  • Familiarity with CAR, SuDS, EIA, flood risk or pollution prevention.

  • Experience preparing environmental management plans and technical reports.

  • Working alongside contractors on infrastructure, housing or renewable energy projects.

  • CSCS certification or membership of the Association of Environmental Clerks of Works (AECoW).

Considering a move into Environmental Clerk of Works?

You don't necessarily need to have held the EnvCoW job title before.

If you're an ecologist, environmental consultant or environmental management professional with transferable experience and an interest in site-based environmental protection, this could be an opportunity to develop a new specialism.

Salary and Benefits

The position offers a salary of £32,000 to £44,000, depending on your experience and technical expertise.

You'll also benefit from:

  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.

  • Company pension scheme.

  • Hybrid working arrangements.

  • Professional development, mentoring and training.

  • Opportunities for career progression.

  • Experience across renewable energy, infrastructure and development projects.

  • A collaborative, supportive multidisciplinary team.

  • Employee discounts, social activities and volunteering opportunities.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

Environmental Clerks of Works play an important role in ensuring development and environmental protection go hand in hand.

This position will allow you to apply your environmental knowledge in practical situations, build relationships with project teams and contribute to responsible development across Scotland.

You'll be joining a consultancy that values technical expertise, collaboration and professional development, with opportunities to broaden your experience across different project types.

For someone who enjoys being outdoors, working with people and seeing the direct impact of their environmental advice, this could be an excellent next step.
