Environmental careers extend far beyond traditional nature-based roles. Across the UK, environmental work now spans science, engineering, land management, planning, sustainability, energy, policy, education and community engagement.
Environmental work is much bigger than one profession
You could spend your career surveying habitats, modelling flood risk, planning renewable-energy infrastructure, analysing climate data, restoring woodland, helping a business reduce its environmental impact, managing resources and waste, developing environmental policy or working with communities to improve the places where they live.
Some of those careers require specialist scientific or technical training. Others are accessible through apprenticeships, vocational routes or skills developed in another industry.
That breadth is one of the environmental sector's strengths, but it can make the first step surprisingly difficult.
Search for environmental careers and you quickly encounter dozens of job titles, qualifications, professional bodies and training courses. It is not always obvious which qualifications employers actually require, whether you need a degree, how much different careers pay, or whether a course you are considering will genuinely improve your prospects.
This guide brings that landscape together.

A sizeable sector — but not a simple growth story
Environmental activity already supports a substantial workforce, but the numbers need context.
The Office for National Statistics uses industry, firm and occupation approaches to examine green employment. That is important because there is no single universally agreed list of green jobs.
The direction of travel is not perfectly straight either.
Although the estimated number of green-job FTEs in 2024 was substantially higher than in 2015, ONS estimates that employment under its headline measure fell by 10,800 FTEs between 2023 and 2024.
So Environment.jobs will not tell you that every green profession is simply "booming".
A more useful picture is that environmental activity has become embedded across a large and diverse part of the economy, while opportunities, skills shortages and barriers to entry vary considerably between professions.
What actually counts as an environmental career?

An ecologist has an obviously environmental occupation.
But what about a project manager delivering renewable-energy infrastructure? A planner assessing a wind-farm proposal? A financial analyst working on climate risk? An engineer designing lower-carbon systems?
Their job title may not contain the words green or environmental, but their work can still contribute directly to environmental outcomes.
Environmental careers therefore include much more than traditional nature-based professions.
The sector needs scientists and ecologists, but it also needs engineers, planners, analysts, tradespeople, project managers, policy specialists, data professionals, educators, communications professionals, sustainability practitioners, land managers and resource specialists.
For career changers, that distinction matters.
Moving into environmental work does not necessarily mean throwing away everything you have previously learned.
Someone with construction project-management experience may have valuable skills for renewable-energy infrastructure. A financial analyst could move towards climate risk or sustainable finance. A communications professional might work in environmental engagement or campaigning. An engineer may be able to redirect existing expertise towards energy, water or environmental infrastructure.
A useful question is therefore not simply:
"Do I already have environmental experience?"
It may be:
"Where could the skills I already have help solve an environmental problem?"

Ecology
Ecology combines scientific understanding with practical fieldwork, analysis, environmental legislation and professional judgement.

Common titles include Assistant Ecologist, Ecologist, Senior Ecologist, Principal Ecologist and specialist biodiversity roles.
The work itself can vary considerably. Current National Careers Service information describes ecologists as potentially working in the countryside, offices, universities or laboratories and notes that a driving licence may be needed to reach fieldwork sites.
CIEEM's 2025 State of the Profession survey adds an important distinction. Employment prospects remained good, but the profession reported a shortage of suitably experienced people for more senior positions. It also found increased workload pressure during the main ecological field-survey season between April and October.
That means two things can be true at the same time:
experienced ecological skills can be difficult to recruit while people seeking their first professional ecology role still face competition.
Conservation
Conservation careers focus on protecting, restoring and managing wildlife, habitats, landscapes and natural resources.
The work can be practical, scientific, educational or managerial.
A countryside or conservation officer might undertake surveys, advise landowners, manage volunteers, organise projects, apply for funding and promote conservation work to the public.
There are university, college, apprenticeship and work-based routes into this kind of career. Current National Careers Service guidance also lists a full driving licence as a requirement for countryside officers.
Land Management, Forestry & Agriculture
Land-based environmental careers combine ecological, practical and commercial decisions about how land is managed.
Professional forestry can involve woodland creation, management and harvesting alongside conservation, budgets, contractors, planning and public engagement.
Current career guidance lists university, apprenticeship and work-based routes into professional forestry and describes the working environment as a combination of office and woodland work.
For people who want environmental work that remains closely connected to landscapes and practical management, these sectors offer very different careers from office-based sustainability or policy roles.
Climate, energy and resources careers
Climate & Carbon
Climate careers extend from scientific research to organisational carbon management.
At the technical end, climate scientists use scientific evidence, statistics, computing and modelling to understand how the climate changes. Current career guidance lists subjects including environmental science, geography, Earth sciences, physics, maths and statistics, meteorology, oceanography and computer science as relevant routes.
Elsewhere, climate and carbon professionals may work on greenhouse-gas inventories, carbon accounting, net-zero strategies, climate adaptation, risk or reporting.
That means a climate scientist and a carbon analyst can both work on climate change while requiring very different qualifications.
Energy & Renewables
The energy transition provides one of the clearest examples of environmental careers extending beyond environmental job titles.

Renewable-energy engineers are important, but clean energy also requires electricians, technicians, construction professionals, planners, project managers and commercial specialists.

England's current Level 6 Environmental Practitioner degree apprenticeship illustrates just how broad professional environmental work can be. Planning & Development
Planning professionals shape how land, communities and development evolve.
They can work on housing, transport, renewable-energy infrastructure, green infrastructure, planning policy and environmental considerations within development.
Planning is also an interesting route for career changers. Current careers guidance confirms that someone with an unrelated first degree can undertake an accredited postgraduate planning qualification.
The profession faces a documented workforce challenge too. RTPI's 2025 research surveyed more than 2,500 planners and found 20% of UK respondents expected to leave the profession within three years.
Environmental Science
Environmental science is best thought of as a foundation rather than a single occupation.
Environmental scientists can move into areas including contaminated land, pollution, water, monitoring, consultancy, research and environmental assessment.
Environmental consultancy commonly recruits from environmental science, environmental studies and sustainability, as well as related disciplines such as biology, chemistry, geoscience, ecology and agricultural science.

Sustainability
Sustainability is one of the broadest areas of environmental work.
In one organisation it may mean carbon, environmental reporting and compliance. Somewhere else it can involve energy, procurement, social value, biodiversity, natural capital, sustainable finance or corporate strategy.
That breadth means there is no single sustainability qualification that defines the profession.
Current careers guidance identifies degree backgrounds ranging from environment and sustainability to engineering, economics, logistics, community development and business management, alongside college and apprenticeship routes.
ISEP's 2026 State of the Sustainability and Environmental Profession report demonstrates how quickly the profession is changing. Its research involved around 1,700 professionals, and 43% of respondents said their role or function had shifted during the previous year. The report also identifies growing specialisation in areas including nature and biodiversity, sustainable finance, natural capital, data and AI.
Education & Community Engagement
Environmental change does not happen through technical specialists alone.
Organisations need people who can explain complex subjects, engage communities, manage volunteers and encourage behaviour change.
Environmental education and engagement roles appear across conservation, sustainability, waste, local government, charities and community organisations rather than forming one standard profession.
For people coming from teaching, communications or community development, this can provide a route into environmental work without retraining as a scientist.
Policy & Campaigning
Policy work can involve research, evidence assessment, briefings, consultation, stakeholder engagement and turning complex information into decisions.
Within government, the Policy Profession provides structured routes into policy work, while environmental and climate matters form part of the wider public-policy landscape.
Campaigning and advocacy careers can additionally involve communications, public engagement and influencing decision-makers.
There is no single environmental qualification for this area. Research, writing, analysis, judgement and stakeholder skills can be just as important as technical environmental training.
Are environmental careers mainly outdoor jobs?

No.
Some are predominantly field based. Others are mainly office, laboratory or data based. Many combine several working environments.
An ecologist may move between countryside surveys and office-based analysis and reporting.
A hydrologist may work in an office, laboratory and countryside.
A town planner might spend much of their time in an office but also visit development sites.
Professional foresters combine office and woodland work.
Sustainability practitioners can work in offices, from home and within communities.
There is no credible national dataset that allows us to say that a particular percentage of environmental careers are outdoor, office-based or hybrid.
So rather than asking whether environmental work is mainly outdoors, ask:
How much field, office, laboratory, community or site-based work do I actually want?
That can narrow your options considerably.
How much do environmental careers pay?
There is no meaningful single salary for an "environmental professional". Pay varies with occupation, experience, specialist expertise, responsibility, employer and location. National Careers Service says its salary ranges are estimates for guidance and draws on sources including ONS, industry bodies, live vacancies and public-sector pay scales. It also notes that salaries can vary with employer, location, hours, training and the seasonal nature of some work.
Climate science is strongly degree based.
Hydrology normally requires a first degree and often postgraduate training, although apprenticeship and work-based routes exist.
Environmental consultancy commonly recruits from relevant environmental and scientific degree backgrounds.
Other careers offer much broader routes.
Sustainability can draw from environmental subjects, engineering, economics, logistics, community development and business, alongside apprenticeship and college routes.
Countryside work can be entered through university, college, apprenticeship or progression from related roles.
Planning allows someone with an unrelated undergraduate degree to undertake an accredited postgraduate planning qualification.
So both of these statements are misleading:
"You need an environmental degree to work in the sector."
and:
"You don't need a degree for environmental careers."

Five common routes into environmental work

University
University remains important for professions requiring specialist scientific, engineering or other academic knowledge. Subjects can include environmental science, ecology, biology, geography, geology, engineering, hydrology, forestry, planning and climate science. But a degree is a foundation rather than a job title. Think about the occupations and capabilities it could lead towards.

Apprenticeship
Environmental apprenticeships can provide paid, structured routes into technical and professional work. Opportunities exist across areas such as environmental practice, ecology, forestry, land management, resources and policy. The exact system depends on which UK nation you live in.

College or vocational training
Not every environmental career is best entered through university. Land, countryside, forestry, resources and operational environmental work can offer vocational and workplace routes. The goal should not be to obtain the highest-level qualification available. It should be to obtain the right qualification for the work you want to do.

Start in an assistant, technician or operational role
Some professions offer genuine progression from junior or technical positions. These roles can help develop the practical competence that employers need alongside academic knowledge. Check the actual progression route rather than assuming every junior job automatically leads to professional qualification.

Environmental apprenticeships: why where you live matters
England
The Level 6 Environmental Practitioner degree apprenticeship is currently approved for delivery and available for starts.
It combines employment with a professionally approved or accredited environmental degree. The standard has a typical duration of 53 months, excluding the assessment period.
England also has a Level 7 Ecologist integrated-degree apprenticeship, current version 1.2.
Level 7 government funding rules changed from 1 January 2026. New Level 7 starts are generally funded for people aged 16–21, with specified exceptions for eligible people under 25. Anyone considering this route should check current eligibility rather than assuming the standard's existence guarantees funding.
Scotland
Scotland operates its own Modern Apprenticeship system.
Its current Land and Nature Modern Apprenticeship includes pathways in Land and Estates, Nature Restoration, and Game and Wildlife Management, with Level 5 and Level 6 options depending on the pathway.
Other relevant Scottish routes include Sustainable Resource Management and Trees & Timber.
Wales
Wales operates its own apprenticeship system.
Careers Wales provides the official information and search route for Welsh apprenticeships.
Do not assume that an English apprenticeship standard or English funding arrangement has an identical Welsh equivalent.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has its own apprenticeship frameworks.
Current routes include environmental-conservation training, with Environmental Conservation Level 3 listed through NI Direct.
Relevant frameworks also exist in areas such as sustainable resource management and water and wastewater operations.
Final note:
A listed apprenticeship standard or framework is not the same thing as a live vacancy. Availability ultimately depends on participating employers and training provision.
What skills do environmental employers look for?
There is no universal environmental skill set.
A hydrologist, campaigner, forester and carbon analyst clearly need different technical knowledge.
But some broad groups of skills recur across environmental careers.

CIEEM reports a shortage of suitably experienced professionals for more senior roles.
That does not automatically remove competition for assistant or graduate positions.
For someone beginning an ecology career, useful experience might come from paid seasonal work, placements, apprenticeships, assistant positions, university field projects, internships or appropriate volunteering.
Volunteering can be useful, but it should not be presented as though everyone must work unpaid for long periods before deserving an environmental career.
A better question is:
What evidence of practical competence does this profession expect at entry level, and what is the most realistic way for me to obtain it?

The UK Government's 2025 Clean Energy Jobs Plan estimates that employment supported across clean-energy industries and supply chains could grow from around 440,000 jobs in 2023 to around 860,000 by 2030 if its clean-energy ambitions are delivered.
That does not mean 860,000 brand-new vacancies.
It is a projection of the total number of jobs supported in 2030.
DESNZ has also identified 31 priority occupations expected to combine significant workforce demand with supply constraints. They include trades, engineering and project-management occupations rather than only stereotypically green job titles.
Ecology
CIEEM's evidence points particularly to shortages of suitably experienced professionals for senior ecology positions rather than a universal shortage at every level.
Planning
RTPI's 2025 research found that one in five surveyed UK planners expected to leave the profession within three years, creating a significant retention and replacement challenge.
Water
CIWEM's 2025 Your Future research cites a need for 43,700 additional people in the water workforce by 2030, including replacement of retiring workers and support for increased investment.
Separately, the same research discusses more than £100 billion of water-infrastructure and flood-defence investment during the relevant planning period in England and Wales.
Sustainability
ISEP's 2026 research describes a profession becoming increasingly specialised while early-career candidates continue to face competition, limited opportunities to gain practical experience and employer expectations for previous experience.

Environmental work contains:
growth areas, shortage occupations, mature professions, competitive entry routes and rapidly changing specialisms — often at the same time.
That is more useful than telling everyone that green jobs are simply "booming".
